- New antibiotics could come from a DNA binding compound that kills bacteria in 2 minutes. Warwick, UK. Jun. 10, 2009: A synthetic DNA binding compound has proven quite effective at binding to the DNA of bacteria and killing all bacteria it touches within two minutes. The research will assist the design of new antibiotic compounds that can attack bacteria in a highly effective way and get around current resistance mechanisms of multi-drug resistant bacteria.

- World Health Organization ranking of antimicrobials according to their importance in human medicine: a critical step for developing risk management strategies for the use of antimicrobials in food production animals. Jul.1, 2009: The WHO ranking system is the first attempt to develop an international consensus on the relative importance of classes of antibacterial agents to human medicine to help guide risk management strategies for use of similar agents in food animal production and agriculture. Reducing the use of critically important antimicrobials in food animals will reduce the amount of resistant bacteria that can develop and spread. This will help mitigate a threat to human health and decrease morbidity and mortality in humans, by preserving effective treatments for use in the case of serious disease caused by these bacteria.

- Promising Antimicrobial Attacks Virus, Stimulates Immune System: A promising antimicrobial agent already known to kill bacteria can also kill viruses and stimulate the innate immune system, according to researchers at National Jewish Health. In a paper appearing online June 4 in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, Michael Howell, PhD, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, and his colleagues demonstrated that the synthetic compound CSA-13 can kill vaccinia virus in cell cultures and in mice. Additionally, they showed that CSA-13 stimulates cells to produce their own antimicrobial proteins.

- EPA Approves Copper As Antimicrobial Agent: The EPA, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, has approved the registration of copper as an antimicrobial agent to reduce harmful bacteria linked to potentially deadly microbial infections, following a year of comprehensive testing in an independent US laboratory. The tests showed that 99.9% of bacteria on a copper surface were eliminated within 2 hours of exposure.
